Beat the Winter Blues with Light Therapy
In the tradition of Daylight Saving Time, the clocks went back one hour on Sunday 25 October at 2:00am, so it is lighter in the mornings and dark earlier in the evenings.

Downpatrick Library will mark this change of season by hosting a Lightbox during the autumn and winter months to give people the chance to top up on daylight despite the shortening of the days.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the Winter Blues, is officially recognised by doctors and psychiatrists as a medical condition that is thought to affect 2 million people in the UK and Ireland and over 12 million people across Northern Europe.

Lightboxes work by simulating sunlight and exposure to more light can help ensure we really do have a constant, stable, sleeping-waking rhythm, improving the quality of our sleep and making us more alert when we're awake, which helps us to function more effectively.

The Lightbox will be free for anyone to use and this initiative is supported by the Health in Mind project. For further details of all events and initiatives being held in Northern Ireland libraries to support the Health in Mind programme, go to www.yourhealthinmind.org.uk
