BBC Northern Ireland and Libraries NI sign new partnership agreement

BBC Northern Ireland and Libraries NI sign a new partnership agreement

BBC Northern Ireland and Libraries NI have signed a new partnership agreement to help support learning and development opportunities for communities across Northern Ireland.

This new agreement builds on many years of co-operation and reflects the shared interests and values of both organisations. It will include different activities and events across a range of different areas. Plans are already in place for a large-scale initiative celebrating the importance and benefits of reading in mid-autumn 2016. And there will also be screenings, talks and other events that explore the connections between libraries, learning, broadcasting and the world of books.

This agreement was signed in Lisburn City Library by Peter Johnston, Director of BBC NI and Irene Knox, Chief Executive of Libraries NI.

Peter Johnston, Director of BBC Northern Ireland, “We have worked closely with Libraries NI on a range of projects in the past but this agreement takes our relationship to a new level and will provide real benefits for audiences with a range of ambitious plans which will be getting underway in the coming months. Partnerships like these are essential to our work and this one reflects our shared interest in providing local people with experiences that inform, educate and entertain. Books and reading will be a big part of what we’ll be doing together, but we’ll also be focusing on digital inclusion and learning - all of which, we believe, will add real value to cultural and community life in Northern Ireland.”

Irene Knox Chief Executive of Libraries NI said:
“We are delighted to have this opportunity to further develop our working partnership with the BBC. The agreement emphasises both organisation’s commitment to develop joint activities and initiatives that will promote learning, reading, digital access and inclusion.  By working together collaboratively we hope to reach communities across Northern Ireland with activities that will connect with people and enrich their lives.”

This partnership, which will run for three years in the first instance, will complement the BBC’s UK-wide agreement with the Society of Chief Librarians.
