Libraries NI partner with NI Science Festival to bring events to Libraries throughout Northern Ireland in February 2018

Libraries NI is working in partnership with the Northern Ireland Science Festival this year to bring a programme of free fun events to libraries across Northern Ireland from 15 – 25 February.

Children can get messy with fizzy, hands-on science as they carry out experiments with the Science Starz Mobile lab in Colin Glen, Finaghy, Grove and Holywood Arches libraries. This unique learning experience will develop the children’s knowledge of science in a fun-filled practical way.

In Lisburn City and Strabane libraries, families can get creative at special arts and craft sessions whilst also browsing the books shortlisted for the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize 2017. At these events those attending will have an opportunity to nominate books for the 2018 Prize.

Ballymena Central and Glengormley libraries will then take centre stage for Micro: bit workshops. Children over the age of ten are invited for an introduction to the BBC Micro:bit - a pocket-sized codeable computer. This will involve an introduction to coding to develop basic skills using simple games and LED lights.

For children between four and eight years old, there will be special science themed Storytimes at Banbridge, Dungannon, Enniskillen, Newry City, Ormeau Road, Portrush and Waterside libraries.

There will also be specific displays throughout the library network including individual patent exhibitions. Wannabe inventors can find fascinating information about historical patents including background information on the inventor, the specification of their idea and design and the drawing of their invention. These range from the practical to the bizarre and include some of the scientific patents registered over the years like stethoscopes and microscopes that are still used today.

Jim O’Hagan, Chief Executive of Libraries NI, said:

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with the NI Science Festival. The wealth of resources in our 96 libraries helps to develop the scientists of the future whilst libraries also have rich heritage resources, including patents, research and reference books, remembering the incredible achievements of the past. The combination of the library network and the incredible festival programme will bring exciting science events to many communities across Northern Ireland and we look forward to growing this in the future.”
