Description
Please join us at Newry City Library for an informative and enjoyable talk

which will look at how and why Home Rule came on to the political agenda in 1885 and remained there until 1914. It will consider why most nationalists were in favour and why unionists were opposed. It will bring in the major players for and against Home Rule, Parnell, Gladstone, Redmond, Carson and Craig. The talk will conclude with a look at why Home Rule was swept away in the revolutionary period.

Dr Peter Collins is Senior Lecturer in History at St Mary’s University College Belfast, where he teaches Irish and British History. He has many publications which include ‘Who Fears to Speak of ‘98’, ‘Nationalism and Unionism 1885-1921’, ‘County Monaghan Sources in the Public record Office of Northern Ireland’., and ‘Pathways to Ulster’s past: sources and resources for Ulster local history’. In addition he has contributed many chapters and articles to books and journals.
