Children and staff at Omagh Library constructed not one but two hotels for our mini-beast friends as part of Green Balloon Week in July 2009.
Branch Library Manager, Julie Gibson, said:
“Libraries NI aims to encourage children of all ages to avail of library services and learn more about the world around them. This was an ideal way of teaching them how easy it is to help care and provide for the wildlife in their own, or rather Omagh Library’s, backyard.
We hosted sessions where children created hotels for mini-beasts, providing them with somewhere to retreat from this lovely summer weather! Children were also able to have some crafty fun recycling discarded CDs and creating butterfly feeders.” Fifty children turned up to decorate our garden with their colourful flowers, filled with sugared water to attract and sustain the butterfly population of Omagh.
Libraries NI is pleased to be working in partnership with the BBC’s Breathing Places “Do One Thing!” campaign in promoting environmental awareness. As part of this Libraries NI are asking library members to request that any correspondence is sent via email rather than via traditional post.
