Carlo Gébler Author Reading in Waterside Library

Libraries NI is delighted to announce that Waterside Library will play host to critically acclaimed Irish writer Carlo Gébler, who will read from his new novel The Dead Eight, on Thursday 15th September, at 7.30pm.

His stunning new novel The Dead Eight addresses the miscarriages of justice endemic in the Irish judicial system. On a wet November morning in 1940, Harry Gleeson discovers the body of Moll McCarthy in a field near the village of New Inn, Co. Tipperary. Moll McCarthy had been shot twice with a shotgun, once in the face.

Carlo Gébler’s novel is an attempt to explain how the local police fabricated their case and fitted up Harry Gleeson and why an entire community looked away as the Irish judicial system prosecuted, convicted and condemned to death an innocent man. Albert Pierrepoint (the hangman) executed Harry Gleeson in Mountjoy in April 1941.

Carlo is the author of a range of books including The Eleventh Summer (1985), How to Murder a Man (1998) and A Good Day For A Dog (2008). In 2000, he published an autobiography, Father and I: A Memoir. He lives outside Enniskillen and teaches creative writing at HMP Maghaberry, where he is writer-in-residence.

Admission to this event is free and all are welcome to come along on Thursday 15th September at 7.30pm, to meet Carlo, hear extracts from The Dead Eight and find out more about his writing career and published books.

You can contact Waterside Library (The Workhouse, 23 Glendermott Road, BT47 6BG), on telephone number: 028 7134 2963 or email: waterside.library@librariesni.org.uk
