Explore Bangor Carnegie Library on European Heritage Open Day

Bangor’s Carnegie Library is one of many venues that will be hosting events and tours as part of European Heritage Open Day on Saturday 10th September.

The library will be open to the public as usual however there will be a tour of the library at 11.30am which members of the public and customers are invited to attend. The tour will explain the evolution of the library from when it was opened officially in 1910, housing both a Library and a Technical school, to the current building which stands prominently on the edge of Ward Park.

Designed by E. L. Wood, the Borough surveyor, the original library was a brick 2-storied building with details borrowed from an Art Nouveau period and gables finished in the Dutch manner. The new Bangor Carnegie library was opened in November 2008 providing seamless integration between the rejuvenated original Carnegie library frontage and the new modern extension to the rear. This was recognised when Bangor Carnegie Library received a Highly Commended award in the 2009 Public Libraries Group/An Chomhairle Leabharlanna Public Library Building Awards in the Architecture Meets Practicality section.

A full programme of activities will be available throughout the day.  Ask staff for details or telephone 028 9127 0591 / Email bangorcarnegie.library@librariesni.org.uk
