  • Robert James Alexander (1899 – n.d.)

    Alexander was a temporary assistant in Belfast Central Library. He served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery and Royal Tank Corps.

  • William Brown (1895 – 1918)

    Brown was an Assistant Librarian in the Lending Department of Belfast Central Library. He served with 1st North Irish Horse and later 9th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 11/12 August 1918. This collection also includes correspondence between Library staff and Brown’s father.

  • Matthew Butler (1893 – n.d.)

    Butler was an Assistant in Falls Road Branch Library. He served as a Private with the Northumberland Fusiliers.

  • Thomas Coulson (1886 – 1971)

    Coulson was the Branch Library Manager of Falls Road Library. He served with several battalions within the Royal Irish Rifles, rising through the ranks to become a Major. In 1930 he wrote the famous spy thriller ‘Mata Hari: Courtesan and Spy’.

    Eagleson was an Assistant Librarian in Donegall Road Branch Library. He served with the 110th Field Ambulance.

  • George Hall Elliott (1856 – 1917)

    Elliott was the Chief Librarian of Belfast Public Libraries from 1888 until his death on 23 January 1917. 'The Library Men’ who served wrote to the Chief Librarian during service. His return correspondence is included in this collection.

    ​Fitzsimons was an Assistant Librarian in the Lending Department of Belfast Central Library. He served with the 41st Casualty Clearing Station.

    Freeland was the Assistant to the Curator of the Museum and Art Gallery which was then housed on the second floor of Belfast Central Library. He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps.

  • John Bewick Goldsbrough (1865 – 1938)

    ​Goldsbrough was the Assistant Chief Librarian of Belfast Public Libraries and Acting Chief after George Elliott’s death in 1917. The ‘Library Men’ who served wrote to the Chief Librarian during service. His return correspondence is included in this collection.
