One of Belfast’s most iconic and well-known public buildings, Belfast Central Library in Royal Avenue will celebrate its 130th anniversary on 13 October 2018.

The Grade A listed building officially opened its doors to the public on 13 October 1888 after the people of Belfast agreed to pay a penny on the rates to raise the necessary funding for the building and running of a free library.

Belfast Central Library is one of the few remaining historic buildings in Belfast still used for its original purpose.

Fast forward 130 years and the library continues to be a cornerstone of the city landscape welcoming thousands of people through the doors each year.

Generations of local communities have immersed themselves in all the library has to offer exploring library collections, attending events taking place or simply taking time to read and relax in this civic shared space.

Jim O’Hagan, Libraries NI Chief Executive said:

“Belfast Central Library is an important city landmark in the heart of Belfast providing valuable services to all members of the community across the city. 130 years is a major milestone and our vision for the next 130 years begins with our aspiration to redevelop Belfast Central Library to preserve its proud history and provide a state-of-the-art library not just meeting the demands of the 21st century, but also setting the standard of services that the public expects from any major city library.”

To mark the occasion, the library will host a free celebratory programme of events including behind the scenes tours of the building and a peek at some of its treasures, musical workshops, exhibitions of the library from its inspiring beginnings to present day, craft and poetry events.

Belfast Central Library has something for everyone so call in and see for yourself why this iconic building will firmly remain part of Belfast’s future for many years to come.
