Lisburn Road Library opened its doors to the public this week (Monday 21 August) after a massive refurbishment project costing £1.44m.

The library opened to delighted members of the public who had waited patiently to see the new look library, which combines a perfect mix of old and new and provides the local community with a modern library capable of delivering all of Libraries NI’s services.

Located in the Malone Conservation Area, the original house was built circa 1890 and Libraries NI has ensured that the character of the building has been maintained throughout the redevelopment.

New furniture and fittings have been installed complementing the original features, such as tiled floors and cornicing. The sliding sash windows have been refurbished and double glazed throughout and the slate roof has also been replaced.

The project has included a sympathetic refurbishment of the former stable block and coach house creating a multi-use community meeting room and group space - and customers are now able to access the courtyard. Features from the stable block have been tastefully restored and combined with modern furniture and design to produce a truly stunning shared space for members of the community to enjoy and use.

Maura Barron, Lisburn Road Branch Library Manager, comments:

“We are delighted to open to doors of Lisburn Road Library to our customers after a wait of nearly a year. It offers a comfortable place to relax and escape and we hope that people appreciate this modern space with its unique features. We have a meeting room which local organisations can hire and we will be able to run events which we were unable to do before due to lack of space. We welcome everyone to call in and see the exciting improvements, to find out about the services that are available and to join the library.”

To become a new library member, simply bring along a means of identification (which includes a home address) and then you can make use of the many free membership benefits.
