With the compliments of the Season written on a cardIn the spirit of Christmas, we have curated a selection of greeting cards from our special collections. Among these treasures, you will find cards that were designed by the renowned Marcus Ward and Company of Belfast, showcasing their exquisite craftsmanship. These cards, carefully preserved in our Fine Book Room, are a testament to the artistry and creativity of the Victorian era.

Additionally, we have included images from a Christmas scrapbook that was lovingly compiled over a hundred years ago. This remarkable piece of history was generously donated to Omagh Library, and it offers a unique window into the Christmas celebrations of the past.

The History of Christmas Cards

The history of Christmas cards is a fascinating journey that dates back to the early 19th century. It was during this period that Christmas cards first made their appearance, thanks to the efforts of Sir Henry Cole. In 1843, Sir Henry commissioned the very first commercial Christmas card, marking the beginning of a new tradition that would capture the hearts of people all around the world. Interestingly, it was Queen Victoria herself who is credited with sending the first official Christmas card, further solidifying its significance.

These Christmas cards were not just simple pieces of paper with well wishes; they held a deeper meaning and were often treasured as keepsakes. People would carefully store them away in memory boxes and scrapbooks, ensuring that the heartfelt messages and beautiful designs would be preserved for years to come.

We would love to know your thoughts!

Today, whether sent through the mail or shared digitally, Christmas cards are still considered by some as a way of bringing people together. But we would love to know your thoughts! Have you written your cards yet? Or perhaps you aren’t planning on sending any! Take part in our poll and let us know.
