At the start of June, it will be 50 years from the official opening of Rathfriland Library and a number of events have been organised to celebrate with customers throughout the week.

Award winning author Stuart Neville will be in the library on Tuesday 13 June from 6:30pm – 8:00pm to discuss writing and his books. Stuart Neville's debut novel, THE GHOSTS OF BELFAST (published in the UK as THE TWELVE), won the Mystery/Thriller category of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and many of his books have now been translated into various languages.

On Friday 16 June from 10:00am to 1:00pm, Rathfriland Library will host a celebratory community coffee morning for local people just to call in. There will be refreshments during this time and to share memories from over the years there will be a display of the history of the library. During the afternoon from 1:30pm to 3:30pm there will also be a heritage Go On session for those interested in knowing more about using Irish birth, death and marriage civil records to trace family history.

Finally to finish off the week there will be a special anniversary Storytime and Craft session for children aged four to eight years old on Saturday 17 June morning from 11:00am to 12 noon.

Commenting on the anniversary, Evelyn Hanna Libraries NI Area Manager said:

“For 50 years, the library and the staff involved have served the community of Rathriland and it is only fitting that we give people an opportunity to acknowledge this. We look forward to welcoming customers old and new to Rathfriland Library to share this important milestone.”
