Tips for Reading to Children

Lots of children books in a libraryReading is really good for children in so many ways and we wanted to give you practical helpful tips that will help any parent or carer to help their children.

  1. A reading routine – this can be as much for parents/carers as it can be for children and it will help everyone; taking time out to read even for 15 minutes can reduce stress whilst also developing a positive life skill
  2. Read out loud and don’t be frightened to have fun – show your creative side and jump into the story with voices and singing if there are rhymes. Your child will love it! And they will be learning in a fun way at the same time
  3. Be a role model – let your family see that reading is important to you by taking time out to stop and read in front of them
  4. Let your children choose their own books – this can be important and libraries are great places to help with this. Many libraries have book shelves and floor book containers that are the perfect height for young children to look through. If your child is struggling to choose then ask a librarian for help.
  5. Make sure the book is visible – this sounds so simple but a key part of storytelling is following the words and the pictures together so make sure you have a place to read where you and your child can both see the book.
