Heritage Week in Libraries

Heritage Week, Know Your Place, 9-14 March 2026Heritage Week returns to libraries across Northern Ireland from 9 to 14 March with a rich programme of free talks, workshops, exhibitions and online events exploring the stories that shape where we live.

This year’s theme, Know Your Place, invites you to discover local history, language, archives, music, migration and family stories through engaging sessions led by historians, writers and heritage specialists. Whether you want to explore your family roots, learn something new about your area, or simply enjoy an interesting talk, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Events are taking place in libraries across Northern Ireland and online, making it easy to attend in person or from home.

At the Crossroads: the campaign for civil rights in Northern Ireland Exhibition  

The Linen Hall exhibition exploring the legacy of the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland will be on display in Shankill Library during Heritage week. This project was developed in partnership with the Irish Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Reconciliation Fund and the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council.

Mapping Monument Exhibition  

Come along to Ballyclare library to explore the Causeway Coast Heritage Trust’s Mapping Monument Exhibition, which delves into the landscapes and legacies of the Ordnance Survey in the Lough Foyle and Binevenagh areas.

Protecting Civilians During the Second World War  

This guided historical walk explores how civilians in Carrickfergus were protected during the Second World War, marking the 85th anniversary of the Belfast Blitz. Participants will discover how air-raid precautions, shelters and emergency services helped reduce risk and safeguard local communities during wartime.

Led by local historian Adrian Hack, the walk highlights key locations around the town and brings to life stories of everyday experience on the home front. Comfortable footwear is recommended.

Black Heritage in NI: Hidden History Exhibition  

As part of Heritage Week, Coleraine Library is pleased to host the Black Heritage in NI: Hidden History travelling exhibition. Presented by North West Migrants Forum, the exhibition explores and celebrates the often-overlooked stories of Black heritage in Northern Ireland. Through carefully researched content and engaging visual displays, it highlights the contributions, lived experiences, and cultural narratives that have helped shape communities across the region.

Then and Now: Larne Through the Lens Exhibition  

Then and Now: Larne Through the Lens is a photographic exhibition pairing historic images of Larne with contemporary photographs of the same locations as they appear today. Featuring photographs generously donated to Larne Library by Larne Camera Club, the exhibition highlights how familiar streets, buildings and public spaces have evolved over time.

The Life and Legacy of Francis Joseph Bigger  

One of Belfast’s most influential cultural figures is being revisited during Libraries NI’s Heritage Week in March 
This illustrated talk explores the life and legacy of Francis Joseph Bigger. A lawyer, antiquarian, historian and a central figure in the Irish Cultural Revival in Ulster. 
Drawing on original research and archival material, the session offers fresh insight into a complex and far-reaching legacy.

Church Metalwork in Armagh: From Patrick to the Normans  

Presented by one of Ireland’s leading medieval archaeologists, this talk traces the story of church metalwork in Armagh from the early Christian period to the Norman era. Drawing on decades of curatorial experience at the Ulster Museum and the National Museum of Ireland, Cormac Bourke reveals how sacred objects illuminate belief, power and craftsmanship across centuries.

History of Down Railway  

Join us for an engaging talk about the Downpatrick and County Down Railway (DCDR), Ireland’s only full-size heritage mainline. Since 1985, DCDR has grown from a small group of enthusiasts working in a field into an award-winning heritage railway and the country’s only Irish Standard Gauge restoration project. 

Museum Curator Neil Hamilton will lead the talk, sharing the railway’s fascinating history, current projects, and ambitious plans for the future.

Voices from the War Memorial: Lisburn and the Second World War in Northern Ireland  

Each year, the Second World War becomes more distant as the voices of those who lived through it are lost to time. Oral history offers a powerful way to preserve these memories, giving us a unique insight into everyday life in wartime Lisburn.

Join Michael Burns, Research Officer at the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum, as he introduces NIWM’s Oral History Collection and shares personal recollections from people who experienced the Second World War in Northern Ireland. Discover Your Family History With NIFHS: DNA Testing and Genealogy Index Showcase  

As part of Heritage week, Ballymena Central Library is pleased to host the Northern Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) for a special family history event. This session offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about researching their ancestry through a showcase of the NIFHS searchable genealogy index, with society members available to demonstrate how the resource can support family history research.

 

NIFHS will also be offering optional DNA testing guidance for those interested in exploring their heritage through genetic genealogy. Visitors can speak directly with society representatives, learn about their work and find out how to begin or develop their own family history journey. The society will also have an information stand and promotional materials available on the day. 

 

Sessions will take place from 11:00am-1:00pm and 2:00pm-4:00pm.

Women of Carrickfergus During the Second World War

The US Army in Carrickfergus During the Second World War  

This guided historical walk explores the presence and impact of the United States Army in Carrickfergus during the Second World War, marking the 85th anniversary of the Belfast Blitz. Participants will learn where American troops were stationed, how they trained, and the ways their arrival shaped local life and communities.

Led by local historian Adrian Hack, the walk visits key locations linked to troop movements and social interaction between residents and visiting forces. Participants are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes.

In this engaging online talk, linguist and heritage researcher Dr Frances Kane draws on her work with Queen’s University Belfast’s Northern Ireland Place-Name Project to uncover what these names reveal about language, landscape and history.
