Libraries NI: Supporting Communities Through Job Clubs

Libraries across Northern Ireland provide an ideal setting for community-based initiatives like Job Clubs, which offer vital support to those seeking employment. Organised and facilitated by local Jobs and Benefits Offices, these sessions give individuals the opportunity to meet with a dedicated Work Coach, gain expert advice, develop key employment skills, and connect with others to improve their job search efforts.
Suzanne, a Work Coach from Knockbreda Jobs and Benefits Office, runs Job Clubs twice a month in Cregagh and Ormeau Road libraries, supporting clients with CV training, interview skills, and confidence building. Suzanne also offers one-to-one sessions in the main library, helping individuals search and apply for jobs using the library’s computers, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to take the next step in finding employment.

She explains why libraries are the ideal setting for these initiatives:
"We wanted to bring the job club into the heart of the community to make it easier for participants to attend and reach as many people as possible. Libraries offer a welcoming, accessible environment where job seekers can meet, share experiences, and support each other. This sense of community can be incredibly motivating."
The library setting offers practical benefits that make a real difference to job seekers. Free access to computers, Wi-Fi, and low-cost printing facilities helps individuals search and apply for jobs while improving their digital skills.
For many Job Club users who don’t have a computer at home, accessing these resources in a library removes a major barrier to employment. Meeting rooms provide a professional and confidential space allowing job seekers to ask questions and receive guidance in a private, supportive environment.
By hosting Job Clubs in libraries, organisations like Knockbreda Jobs and Benefits Office can connect with more people in an informal yet structured setting. For anyone seeking employment support, visiting a library-based Job Club could be the first step towards a new opportunity!
