Across Northern Ireland, libraries have become vibrant spaces for learning, discovery and conversation—and for the past two years, they’ve also been the setting for an inspiring partnership between Libraries NI and the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY).

As part of the ‘For Every Child…Every Right’ exhibition tour, libraries have played host to creative and engaging workshops led by Children’s Commissioner Chris Quinn and NICCY’s Participation Team.

Each workshop introduces children to their rights and the role of adults in protecting them. Crucially, children also share their views, which will inform a special youth report for government.

Speaking from Glengormley Library, Chris Quinn said: “We have been touring for two years in partnership with Libraries NI, and it’s been phenomenal to get into communities and into libraries. The project was such a success after one year that we extended it.”

Since October 2003, more than 930 pupils from 186 schools have taken part in these events; exhibitions have been held in 18 libraries

Beyond the workshops, the Commissioner highlighted the vital role libraries play in supporting children’s literacy and wellbeing. Reflecting on his own experience of struggling with reading as a child, he emphasised the importance of making reading enjoyable and accessible, describing libraries as great places where children can learn, play, and experience reading in an engaging and interactive way.

Libraries remain welcoming, inclusive spaces where children can explore books, enjoy events, and discover the joy of reading for pleasure. Activities like Lego Club and themed story times make libraries engaging for children of all ages, while the friendly, supportive environment encourages families to read and learn together.

From sparking big conversations about children’s rights to inspiring a love of reading, libraries across Northern Ireland are helping young people thrive—one workshop, one story, one right at a time.

We need to make time in our busy schedules to do that little bit of reading with your child and encourage children to read for fun
