Libraries can play an important role in providing support for people living with dementia and their carers. Initiatives such as the Treasured Memories Café provide a welcoming space where participants can engage in meaningful activities that support cognitive health and strengthen community connections.
Reserach highlights that mentally stimulating activities, such as puzzles, reminiscence, reading or creative outlets, may improve cognitive function and slow the progression of dementia symptoms.
A prime example is the Treasured Memories Café in Rathcoole Library, which meets on the last Wednesday of each month. This popular event attracts members from the local community, alongside residents from the nearby Croft Supported Living Scheme, who attend regularly with Praxis Care. Participants enjoy activities designed to spark conversations and rekindle treasured memories.

Tracy Smyth, Dementia Care Coordinator with Praxis Care, emphasises the benefits of these gatherings. The Treasured Memories Café is something our tenants look forward to every month. It’s a chance to reminisce, engage in sensory activities and feel connected to the local community. It helps them feel valued and active, which is so important for their wellbeing.

By delivering tailored programming like this, Libraries NI reinforces its commitment to enhancing wellbeing and building meaningful relationships within the local community.
