The recent Changing Attitudes to Ageing events at Omagh and Derry Central Libraries showed how Libraries NI, working with the Commissioner for Older People NI (COPNI) and The Open University Ireland (OU), is making a meaningful impact in the lives of older people. The events went beyond raising awareness - they provided practical advice, social opportunities, and support to help people live healthier, more connected lives.
Over 200 people attended the events, gaining useful insights on staying active, maintaining independence, and building social networks. At Derry Central Library, Evelyn Hoy, Chief Executive of COPNI, spoke about the importance of creating communities where older people feel valued and supported. Her talk highlighted how libraries offer safe, welcoming spaces where people can learn, socialise, and access essential services.
Dr Sinéad Eccles, a neuropsychologist from The Open University, shared expert advice on keeping the mind active and maintaining overall wellbeing, with an emphasis on the importance of reading and continuous learning. Many attendees said they felt motivated to adopt the recommended strategies by exploring library services that supported lifelong learning and social interaction.
The informal tea-and-coffee break provided a chance for attendees to meet others, share experiences, and ask questions of staff from other organisations who attended the events such as PSNI for Scam Awareness, Council Staff and local charity organisations. Evelyn Hoy emphasised the critical role libraries play, saying:
"Older people tell us they enjoy coming to libraries to browse books, read the papers, have a cup of coffee, and meet friends. With fewer public spaces available, libraries play a key role in fostering connection and supporting wellbeing.
These events reinforced Libraries NI’s commitment to supporting older people by providing more than books. Regular activities such as Tea and Newspapers, Knit and Natter, and Memory Cafés create welcoming environments where people can learn new skills, make friends, and access advice and support.
