Libraries NI’s free online learning programme has the unique ability to help people try new activities, build confidence and improve their wellbeing all from the comfort of their own home.

Online Pilates classes ran from September 2025 to January 2026, led by highly experienced instructor Neil Healey. With more than 20 years’ teaching experience and a specialism in accessible mat-based Pilates, Neil guided participants through sessions designed to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and support overall wellbeing.

The programme proved extremely popular, with 1,055 participants taking part across 17 sessions.

For one participant living with long-term health conditions, the classes made a noticeable difference. Before joining the sessions, they struggled to sit on the floor with their legs stretched out without shaking due to weak core strength. Within a few weeks they were able to do this comfortably and confidently, something they directly attribute to the exercises learned during the classes.

They explained that the clear guidance and alternative movement options meant they could follow the exercises easily and work at a level that suited their body. The weekly sessions also gave them something positive to look forward to and quickly became part of their routine.

“Just wanted to say thank you to Libraries NI for providing this class. I can really see the benefits to my core strength and flexibility. This is an excellent service especially for those who cannot attend a class.”

Stories like this highlight the value of Libraries NI’s online programme. For people who may find it difficult to attend activities in person, virtual sessions offer a practical way to stay active, learn new skills and take part in shared experiences.

Free sessions like these continue to help people across Northern Ireland improve their wellbeing, build confidence and stay connected with learning opportunities.
