The "Town Solicitor"
Belfast

Sir,

I had no idea I was committing a wrong by continuing to draw my monthly salary.

I have been put in class W, Army Reserve, and sent to work on the Leeds tramways. I am liable to be called up for Military service at a moment's notice. Being as I am still connected with the Army, I felt sure I was still entitled to draw my salary from the Belfast Corporation, as I am not a discharged soldier.

I am very sorry I did not write to the Librarian, and let him know how I was placed. But I expected to be back in the Army again before this.

I may mention that I am going back to the Army in a day or two, as I have ceased connection with the Leeds Tramways.

It is not within my power to refund the money, which I had the misfortune to receive. I only earned an average of £2 per week, 38/- of which went to pay for board and lodgings for myself and wife.

Again sorry for the trouble I have caused.

I am Sir,
Your obedient servant,
Matthew Butler
