Dear Mr Coulson,

Very glad to have your letter and the two snapshot photographs. I feel sure that you, in common with many thousands of others, are on the eve of a marching order. If I should not see you again before leaving, take with you my very kindest regards, as well as every member of the Libraries' staff. We wish you and all those going with you to the front Godspeed, safe passage there, success in your warfare against our common enemy, and safely back again. I should like to have shaken you by the hand before leaving, but take this as a token of my kindly feelings towards you.

The Library Committee, in dealing with the estimates last Thursday, made some big reductions. The item for books which I had for the Central and the Branches has been reduced 25 per cent.

England is looking for big things next month, and the world is certainly nearing a crisis in its history.

I am,
Yours very sincerely,
