G. H. Elliott Esq.
Sir,
I'm sure you will tender the expression I have forgotten you altogether, well Sir I have been exceedingly busy so I could not very well write you.
I am still alive & in the best of health, the weather is very good so I am fairly comfortable out here. I am in the trenches at present, have been in 14 days and no prospect of being relieved. I am writing this at my dug-out door. I am afraid to go out, the Huns are sending big heavy shells all round. When I have to go into the trench I have to run like the dickens and keep the head down. Bit of a change from the Library. I have not been shaved for a fortnight you would not know me if we met. Got my face washed once; so you may guess the state of affairs out here.
Please remember me to all the staff. I will write soon again, hoping you are quite well yourself.
I am Dear Sir,
Yours respectfully
Segt. John McCausland
