30.11.17

Mr J.B. Goldsbrough,
Chief Librarian,

Sir,

Your letter dated 1.11.17 received this evening, I got quite a surprise when I received it; I did not expect an answer so soon. I was also surprised to know Brown had transferred to the Infantry. Of course mounted troops are of very little use in France, all Infantry work, at least that was the way when I was there; perhaps the conditions have changed since then.

I suppose you have read about our little efforts out here, well we have driven the Turk towards Jerusalem; of course I can't tell you anything more; the censor might object. The weather is still very warm, especially during the day, at night it is very cold, but I have a few good blankets so I don't mind much, anything is better than rain. I suppose you have very rough weather at present, I had a letter from home they were complaining about the cold and wet.

I saw a notice to say that officers were wanted for the Royal Flying Corps. I think I will have a shot at it, (some adventure). I have just finished writing to Brown, thanks very much for his address. I had lost touch with him for a long time. I'm glad to know he is still alive and well. I think the Library staff has been very lucky not one killed and only one wounded, I hope it continues. I had a letter from Miss Millar210 ; glad to know she has recovered. I sent her a letter a few days ago. I wrote to Mr Rowan211 yesterday. I did not expect one from you before Xmas. I hope you will receive this one in time, as it conveys my best wishes to you and staff.

I will end up now wishing you all a very Merry Xmas and a Prosperous New Year. There is a slight alteration in my add. please add. all communications J McCausland, 5th R.I.Regt. Egyptian Expeditionary Force, Egypt.

I am Dear Mr Goldsbrough
Yours very sincerely,
John McCausland
