C 12 ward
3rd London General Hosp.,
Wandsworth
London SW

3.10.18

Dear Mr Goldsbrough,

Perhaps you have already heard I'm in hospital; well I'll give you the news. I was gassed on the night of the 6th & 7th Sept. I got a bad dose of Yellow Cross (Mustard) and Phosgene gases. I was stone blind for 3 weeks but thank heaven my sight is now normal; of course my eyes are still weak, I wear dark glasses during the day. My eyes are so weak I can't read the papers yet. So you may guess time hangs heavily on my hands. This is a fine hosp. built on Wandsworth Common a nice distance from London. At present I'm unable to go out. When I am fit I will have a fine opportunity of seeing the sights around here.

The night I was gassed the Hun was very active. He shelled us the whole night with gas and H.E. shells he knocked out the Colonel, Adjutant Padne Lesser [?] Gun Officer, Doctor & myself quite a nice little lot to say nothing of the number of men he got at the same time.

We seem to be doing well on all fronts I hope our advance continues the Hun has his hands full, I guess the war Lord is a little rattled.

I must end now. Kindest regards to all the staff.

I am Dear Mr Golds.
Yours faithfully,
J McC
