Dear Mr Elliott,

I received your letter yesterday.

Before I answer your question I must apologise for not writing to you, but one has not much time to write here, and I am a bad correspondent.

In answer to question No. 2. regarding the pay received at the commencement of my service, I received seven shillings per week and I am still receiving the same amount.

Regarding question No.3. I leave no allotment to anyone. I hope you will excuse this scribble as we are near the firing line, where pens and ink cannot be procured.

The battalion I am in has being37 in and out of the trenches regularly this past two months.

I have had some exciting experience in the trenches, but so far I have managed to scrape through safely.

I will now close, hoping you are keeping well, also all the members of staff.

I am,

Yours very truly,

A.S. Roy
