Footpath in the outdoorsOn Monday 15 January 2024, Bangor Carnegie Library is starting the Walking for Health program specifically designed for adults who are keen to start getting active in the New Year.

This eight-week initiative is supported by the Public Health Agency and is delivered across all five health trust areas. Walking for Health South Eastern Trust Co-ordinator, Wendy McDowell has provided Libraries NI District Officer Gary Hill with comprehensive walk leader training as to how to set up and effectively manage a walking group.

Walking is a great activity when it comes to improving your health and overall well-being and this new weekly walking group will provide support and encouragement as people start to make positive changes in the New Year.

Libraries NI District Officer Gary Hill said:

“The beauty of the health walks is that they are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Not only do they promote the physical health benefits of being active, but they also have a positive impact on mental health and foster social interaction.

“One of the fantastic aspects of walking is that it is a low-impact exercise that requires minimal equipment. You can stroll at your own pace, without worrying about the risks associated with more intense forms of exercise. All our walks will be conducted in the beautiful surroundings of Ward Park in Bangor so I would encourage all those who would like to join in to come along and give it a try.”

Walking for Health, South Eastern Trust Co-ordinator Wendy McDowell added;
“I am delighted that Bangor Carnegie Library is including walking as part of their programme. I wish ‘A Walk in the Park’ every success and hope that it develops into a regular walking group delivered throughout the year. Happy walking!”

Extensive research has shown that adults and older individuals should aim for 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 vigorous intensity such as running or sport each week. Additionally, it is recommended that all adults incorporate some strength and balance activity such as carrying shopping bags, bowls or Tai Chi at least 2 days per week. Walking regularly is an excellent way to meet the moderate intensity target, and the best part is that it can be done at anytime, anywhere, and with your friends, family members, or even work colleagues. Plus, it won't cost you a penny, and it's loads of fun!

Throughout the program, participants will be introduced to the many free library services available, including how to access and download eAudiobooks so you can walk along enjoying the company of renowned personalities such as Stephen Fry and Michelle Obama as they share their captivating stories. With their voices in your ear, you’ll have the perfect companions to keep you engaged during your walks.

The first session will take place at 11:30am on Monday 15 January 2024 and will run for a total of eight weeks. The final session will be held on Monday 4 March 2024.
