Published 27 Feb 2025

Heritage Week 2025Libraries NI is thrilled to announce the return of Heritage Week from Monday 10 to Friday 14 March 2025, a week-long initiative celebrating the rich history and cultural heritage of Northern Ireland.

This year’s Heritage Week offers an exciting mix of exhibitions, film archives, talks, and historical displays that bring the stories, people, and events that have shaped Northern Ireland to life. In addition to exhibitions showcasing vintage photographs from the Bigger and McDonald photograph archive, visitors will have the opportunity to engage with authors who will share insights into their work and local history.

Among the highlights, Derry Central Library will feature a Men at Work Exhibition, celebrating the hardworking men of the region from 1927 to 1947, while Shantallow Library will take visitors on a historical journey along the River Foyle, exploring its significance to local communities. At Creggan Library, the stories of women balancing work and family life during this period will be celebrated, and Waterside Library will focus on the emotional journeys of those who emigrated in search of new beginnings.

In addition to these exhibitions, PRONI on Tour will make a special stop at Cookstown Library on Wednesday 12 March, offering a rare opportunity to explore original archival documents with PRONI staff, perfect for anyone interested in family history or local research.

Ahead of Heritage Week 2025, local author Wendy Erskine explores the hidden treasures of the Fine Book Room in Belfast Central Library. Wendy will launch a week-long series of author talks as part of Heritage Week, taking place from 10–14 March 2025.

A series of author talks with Wendy Erskine, Jan Carson, Martina Devin, and Tony Macauley will also feature during the week at Belfast Central Library, providing a platform for local writers to discuss their work and the historical themes within their books. These events will give attendees the chance to engage directly with authors, providing deeper insights into the historical context behind their stories. Visitors will also get a chance to delve into Northern Ireland Screen’s archives celebrating the work of local writers.

“Heritage Week is an opportunity for the people of Northern Ireland to connect with their past and gain a deeper understanding of the local history that has shaped the communities we live in today,” said Julie Reid, Deputy Head of Service at Libraries NI.

“We are excited to offer an engaging and diverse programme that includes rare archival exhibitions and personal insights from local authors. Whether you’re interested in history, literature, or local culture, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
