Celebrate Positive Ageing Month with Libraries NI: Embrace Connection, Learning and Wellbeing at Your Local Library
Published 22 Sept 2025
This October, Libraries NI is proud to celebrate Positive Ageing Month by highlighting the vital role our libraries play in enriching the lives of older adults across Northern Ireland. In a time when social isolation and loneliness can affect wellbeing, libraries provide welcoming, inclusive spaces where older people can connect, learn, and thrive.
Reducing Social Isolation and Building Community
Libraries NI recognises the importance of fostering social connections to combat isolation, especially among older adults. Throughout October, our libraries will be buzzing with engaging social events designed to bring people together in a warm and friendly environment. Whether it’s joining a book club, sharing stories at Knit and Natter, or enjoying a relaxed Tea and Newspapers session, there’s a welcoming space for everyone to meet new friends and develop existing relationships.
Enhancing Digital Confidence and Connectivity
In today’s digital world, staying connected online is essential for maintaining relationships and accessing services. Libraries NI offers tailored digital skills workshops such as Go On and Got IT? sessions that help older adults confidently use computers, tablets, and smartphones. From sending emails to video calling family members, our patient and knowledgeable staff support every step of the learning journey, going at the pace that suits each learner’s needs and comfort.
Promoting Health, Wellbeing, and Lifelong Learning
Physical and mental wellbeing go hand-in-hand with positive ageing. Our libraries provide a variety of programmes focused on health and wellness, including mindfulness classes, armchair exercise sessions, and informative talks covering topics relevant to older adults. Beyond wellbeing, we champion lifelong learning through our vast collections of books, eAudiobooks, eBooks, and eNewspapers, alongside educational events that stimulate the mind and spark curiosity.
