Digital devicesThis World Mental Health Day, Thursday 10 October, Libraries NI is hosting a Digital Detox Hour and everyone is invited to take part.

From 11:00am to 12 noon, visit your local participating library, set your devices aside, and enjoy a peaceful hour with a complimentary cup of tea or coffee in a warm, welcoming environment. Whether you're a regular visitor or stepping through the doors of a library for the first time, this is the perfect opportunity to recharge, connect with others, and take a welcome break from the demands of everyday life. Most libraries will be taking part in the Digital Detox Hour on Thursday 10 October, but please note that times may vary, and some branches may hold the event at a different time or on another day due to local opening hours.

No screens, no distractions—just you, your community, and a moment to unwind. This hour is open to everyone, whether you’re working, retired, between jobs, or simply looking for a space to relax. It’s a chance to clear your mind, enjoy a change of pace, and meet others in a friendly setting. Picking up a book can also help you to escape into another world of intrigue, espionage, romance or travel.

Libraries NI Chief Executive Dr Jim O’Hagan said:

“We understand how crucial mental health is to our overall wellbeing, and the Digital Detox Hour provides a way for people to step away from the constant pull of screens and take time to connect with those around them. Our libraries offer a calm, inviting space where people can enjoy a moment of relaxation and peace. We hope this initiative also encourages more people to explore the many services and resources our libraries have to offer.”

While the Digital Detox Hour encourages people to unplug and recharge, it’s also an opportunity to support Action Mental Health, Libraries NI’s charity partner. Donations will be welcome to help raise vital funds for mental health initiatives across Northern Ireland.

Jonathan Smyth from Action Mental Health added:

“We are delighted to partner with Libraries NI for this event. Looking after our mental health is something we all need to prioritise and initiatives like this from Libraries NI help to show how taking simple steps like taking a break from the digital world, for even an hour, to connect with others or get involved in an activity such as reading a book, can have a really positive impact on our wellbeing.

“The Digital Detox Hour for World Mental Health Day not only offers people a chance to take some time out and unwind, but also helps raise awareness and support for the important work Action Mental Health do in the community. We are really grateful for the support of everyone at Libraries NI.”
