Derry Central Library Celebrates Local Stories with Two Engaging Book Launches This November
Published 29 Oct 2024
Derry Central Library is delighted to host two unique and thought-provoking book launches this November, each offering a connection to local history and personal stories that resonate with the community.
Kicking off the month is the launch of Alice McLoughlin’s More Precious Than Gold: My Enduring Connection with John McShain—the Man Who Built Washington on Monday 4 November from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. This compelling book pays tribute to John McShain, the Irish American building contractor behind some of America’s most iconic structures, including the Jefferson Memorial, The Pentagon, and the reconstruction of The White House. McShain’s roots are tied closely to Derry—his parents emigrated from the city to Philadelphia in the 1880s, where they met and married. Today, many of his cousins still reside in the Derry area, making this event particularly meaningful for the local community.
Alice’s personal story intertwines with McShain’s legacy; she received a scholarship from the McShain Foundation that enabled her to pursue her education in the United States. Her book reflects not only on the architectural wonders McShain created but also on the transformative power of generosity and education.
A few weeks later on Saturday 16 November from 12:30pm, Derry Central Library will host the launch of Bad With Her Nerves, the memoir of award-winning poet and playwright Bernadette Kerr.
Her book offers a deeply personal and candid exploration of mental health, tracing her journey from a Tyrone childhood during the Conflict to her years as a midwife, and the struggles she faced as a new mother dealing with severe postnatal depression. The memoir sheds light on the challenges of navigating motherhood and mental health, highlighting the need for better support—a cause Bernadette passionately advocates for.
In conversation with local author and journalist Felicity McCall, Bernadette will share her story, read excerpts from her memoir, and engage with the audience in a Q&A session, followed by a book signing. Complimentary refreshments will be available, creating a welcoming and open space for attendees to connect with the author.
Both events are free to attend and provide the community with a chance to engage with authors whose work celebrates local heritage and personal triumph.
