Derry Central Library Presents: Orphans and Strangers Book Launch
Published 11 Sept 2025
Derry Central Library is delighted to welcome local author Gemma Hill for the official launch of her new book Orphans and Strangers. The event will take place in the library on Thursday 18 September from 6:00pm – 7:00pm.
This special evening will give readers the chance to hear directly from Gemma about the inspiration behind her writing and the journey to publication.
Set against the backdrop of wartime Fermanagh and later the Troubles, Orphans and Strangers tells the story of William, a man torn between love, loyalty and loss. Defying his family to marry Margaret, a Catholic nurse, William’s life spirals through tragedy, war and betrayal, leaving scars that span generations. Years later, his choices come back to haunt him as his son George seeks vengeance, drawing the family into the heart of Northern Ireland’s conflict.
Exploring themes of how war, loss and trauma shape identity, family ties and the quest for belonging, Orphans and Strangers promises to be a compelling addition to contemporary fiction.
Admission is free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please contact Derry Central Library on 028 7122 9990 or email derrycentral.library@librariesni.org.uk
