Libraries NI Brings Hands-on Science Home this February Half Term with Dr Jo
Published 09 Jan 2026
Who knew a simple sheet of paper could hold so many scientific secrets?
This February half term, families across Northern Ireland are invited to join science educator Dr Jo Montgomery for Paper Lab – Science You Can Try at Home, a lively online science show presented as part of Libraries NI’s events for the NI Science Festival.
Taking place on Friday 13 February at 10.30am via Zoom, this free interactive event promises big science ideas using the simplest of materials – paper. Expect clever experiments, surprising discoveries and plenty of “how did that work?!” moments, all designed to get curious minds thinking.
During the session, children aged 8–11 and their grown-ups will explore the hidden science of everyday paper – from chromatography and capillary action to static electricity, optical illusions, engineering structures and even maths puzzles. There’ll be live demonstrations, mini-investigations to try along at home, and plenty of ideas to keep experimenting long after the screen switches off.
Leading the session is the brilliant Dr Jo Montgomery, an award-winning Chartered Science Teacher and research scientist with over 20 years’ experience bringing science to life for children and families.
With a background spanning neuroscience research, clinical trials and classroom teaching, Dr Jo is known for turning complex scientific concepts into fun, hands-on activities that feel more like play than learning.
Running from 11 to 22 February, the NI Science Festival celebrates the wonders of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths with events for all ages across the region. Libraries NI is delighted to be part of the festival again this year, hosting a fun, accessible online event that families can enjoy together from home.
Paper Lab is free to attend, but booking is essential. To reserve your place click here to register now.
