Libraries NI encourages families to switch off and reconnect during Mental Health Awareness Week

Libraries NI is proud to launch The Big Family Switch Off—a network-wide initiative taking place during Mental Health Awareness Week (Monday 12 May to Sunday 18 May 2025).
With this year’s theme of ‘Community’, the initiative invites families, parents, carers, and children to step away from screens and rediscover the joy of real connection in their local library—a space designed to welcome everyone.
Throughout the week, libraries across Northern Ireland will host Big Family Switch Off events, offering families the chance to slow down and enjoy time together, free from digital distractions. Each branch will shape its own activities, but all will focus on creating a calm, supportive space where people can relax, meet others, and feel a sense of belonging.
Being surrounded by books and taking time to read—even for as little as six minutes—has been shown to reduce stress levels by up to 68%, according to a study by the University of Sussex. Spending time reading together in the comfortable setting of the library can be a simple but powerful way to unwind, spark conversation, and enjoy each other’s company—while also supporting mental wellbeing.
Jim O’Hagan, Chief Executive of Libraries NI, said:
“Libraries are trusted spaces at the heart of our communities. They’re free, welcoming, and open to everyone—places where people can come together and feel part of something. During Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re encouraging families to take a step back from screens and spend time together in the library. It’s a simple idea, but one that reflects what libraries do best: bringing people together and supporting wellbeing.”
The initiative is inspired by the Mental Health Foundation, when they recently highlighted the importance of strong social connections and supportive communities in promoting happiness, resilience, and long-term mental wellbeing.
Libraries will also support their charity partner, Action Mental Health, throughout the week with local fundraising efforts. Donation boxes will be available in branches, and contributions—no matter how small—are very welcome.
