Libraries NI Supports Loneliness Awareness Week by Celebrating the Power of Everyday Connections
Published 19 May 2025
As Loneliness Awareness Week approaches (9 – 15 June 2025), Libraries NI is encouraging people to take a fresh look at what their local library provides for customers in communities across Northern Ireland.
With 96 public libraries, Libraries NI plays a vital role in supporting connection and wellbeing through inclusive, welcoming spaces supported by regular programmes of informal activities that help bring people together and connect with others.

From Knit and Natter groups and Tea and Newspapers mornings to Reading Groups and Mindful Colouring sessions, libraries offer opportunities for conversation, creativity, reflection and — perhaps most importantly — community. For example, parents and carers attending events such as Rhythm and Rhyme or Lego Club often enjoy a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where casual chats and shared experiences can naturally unfold.
This year’s theme, Meeting Loneliness Together, focuses on breaking the stigma surrounding loneliness by recognising it as a natural human emotion. Libraries have long been a place where people can find not just books, but a sense of belonging. For example, with increased numbers of people working from home there can be a feeling of isolation particularly for younger people. The local library, with desk facilities and free Wi-Fi, provides an alternative place to work and connect with others away from the four-wall confinement of home.

Dr Jim O’Hagan, Chief Executive of Libraries NI, said:
“Libraries make a real difference to people’s lives. We regularly hear how taking part in a library activity — whether it’s a Knit and Natter group or simply reading the paper with others — has helped someone build confidence, form friendships and feel more connected.
“As a trusted community service, Libraries NI is proud to support the aims of Loneliness Awareness Week and continues to work in partnership with individuals, organisations and local communities to reduce isolation and promote wellbeing throughout the year. You will always receive a warm welcome at your local library, and as we mark Loneliness Awareness Week, we’re inviting those who haven’t yet discovered what libraries have to offer to take that first step through the door.”
Public libraries are also one of the few places where you can spend meaningful time without the expectation of spending money. This accessibility matters — particularly during a time when the cost of living continues to impact individuals and families across Northern Ireland. Whether you’re attending a group session, accessing digital support, enjoying a quiet corner with a book, or simply taking part in conversation, there’s no pressure — just the space and the opportunity to feel part of something.
In addition to organised activities, Libraries NI provides access to a wide range of free services including Wi-Fi, computer access, health information, eBooks and eAudiobooks, family events, and quiet places to relax or work. Staff are always on hand to offer support and guidance, and all are welcome — regardless of age, background or circumstances.
