Tackle the Winter Blues at Your Local Library
Published 06 Nov 2024
Libraries NI is inviting everyone in the community to discover a new way to lift their spirits during the dark winter months by using a SAD Lightbox, now available in all public libraries across Northern Ireland. Designed to help ease the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), these lightboxes offer an accessible and supportive solution for those seeking a brighter, more balanced state of mind.
Winter’s shorter days and gloomy weather can disrupt our internal body clocks and contribute to SAD, a type of depression recognised by medical professionals. Common symptoms include persistent low mood, loss of interest in daily activities, irritability, and fatigue. With approximately 2 million people in the UK and Ireland affected, light therapy is a proven approach to restoring wellbeing and vitality.
Helen Poston, Libraries NI Service Development Manager, highlighted the importance of making these lightboxes widely available;
“Libraries NI is dedicated to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing across our communities. We encourage people to come in and use the lightboxes, whether to read, knit, or simply unwind in the welcoming environment of their local library, and experience the positive effects of light therapy.”
“Visiting the library to use a SAD Lightbox not only provides an opportunity for selfcare but also offers the added benefits of a quiet, comfortable space and access to books, activities, and resources that further enhance wellbeing. Spending time in the library can help individuals feel connected and supported while benefiting from the uplifting effect of the light.”
Light therapy typically involves 20–30 minutes of exposure per day, and studies have shown that consistent use can improve energy levels and overall mood. The lightboxes simulate natural outdoor light, helping to boost serotonin levels and regulate sleep patterns.
The lamps are available to use in libraries during opening hours throughout the winter, with no need to book—simply drop in and sit down beside one or speak to a member of staff if you require any assistance.
