Tackle the Winter Blues in Your Local Library
Published 12 Nov 2025
As the darker days set in, many people notice a drop in mood and motivation. To help brighten everyday routines this winter, Libraries NI has made SAD Lightboxes available in every public library across Northern Ireland for customers to use free of charge.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), sometimes known as the winter blues, can affect sleep, concentration and motivation. Light therapy is widely recognised as a simple and effective way to help ease these symptoms by simulating natural daylight, which may support energy levels and improve mood.
The lightboxes are easy to use and can be enjoyed while reading, writing, crocheting or simply taking a quiet moment to unwind. Staff are on hand to help you get started if needed. There is no need to book – just call into your local library, take a seat and enjoy some uplifting time out.
Deirdre Nugent, Libraries NI Services Manager said:
“We know that the darker months can be challenging, and many people feel a noticeable dip in energy and motivation. Libraries are warm, welcoming spaces at the heart of communities, and we want everyone to have access to practical support for wellbeing. We would encourage customers to call in, take a seat beside a lightbox and see how they feel. Sometimes a small change in routine can make a real difference.”
In addition to using a lightbox in the library, customers over the age of 16 can now borrow a lightbox to take home for a period of three weeks, the same way you would borrow a book. Simply ask staff in your local library for details.
Tips for using a SAD Lightbox:
• Spend 20–30 minutes near the lamp each day during winter
• Sit comfortably and glance toward the light occasionally, no need to stare directly at it
• Avoid using screens at the same time
• Try not to use the lamp within four hours of bedtime
• If you have any health concerns, speak to your GP before starting light therapy
SAD Lightboxes are available to use in libraries during opening hours throughout the winter. Click here for opening hours and locations.
