Mr Doubler Begins Again

Mr Doubler Begins Again by Seni Glaister

Oh I really liked this book. It's one of those life affirming gems that comes along once a year in the same vein as The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry or A Man Called Ove.

This is the story of Mr Doubler - grower of and connoisseur of the humble potato. Since his wife left him all he's cared about are his crops of potatoes, homemade gin and his housekeeper Mrs Millwood whose daily visits represent his only contact with the outside world. However when she becomes hospitalized due to cancer, Doubler's daily routine becomes so imbalanced that life becomes unbearable and he is forced to venture beyond his comfort zone and meet other people.

The pace of the writing and plot development are beautifully handled and I would have no hesitation in recommending this story of food, friendship and new beginnings.
