The Fortune Men

The Fortune Men by Nadifa Mohamed

I really enjoyed this fiction book based on a true story of a Somalian man Mahmood Mattan who lived in Tiger Bay, Cardiff in the 1950’s. He is a bit of a chancer and rascal who gets in trouble with the law but believes that the justice system is just and truth will prevail. The book allow us to get right inside Mahood’s character and its flaws. His pride and obstinacy are his downfall but his situation begins to humble him and bring out some goodness hidden behind his gruff exterior. The book portrays the racism in this era of the British people and the establishment. This book was short listed for the 2021 Booker Prize.
