The Lost

The Lost by Claire McGowan

The Lost, by Rostrevor author Claire McGowan, is the first in her Doctor Paula Maguire series of six. Paula is a forensic psychologist, working with London's largest Missing Persons Unit when she is seconded to the Missing Person's Review Unit in her home town, the fictional Irish border town of Ballyterrin. The author describes this fictional border location in Northern Ireland as a 'general crossroads of shiftiness, ex-terrorists, and smuggling'. From the beginning of the book it is obvious that Paula is good at her job, will throw herself totally into her investigations, has both intuition and dedication but isn't good at following orders.

Paula is at first reluctant to join the new task force, which has been set up in the small town of Ballyterrin, dedicated to finding missing people. The initial investigation is concentrating on reports of two missing teenagers and as bodies appear the town is gripped by fear of a serial killer, fuelled by rumours and secrets. As the story unfolds it is clear that something dark and mysterious has happened in Paula's past, and the sense of suspense captures the reader's curiosity as the character of Paula is further developed. I was left wanting to find out more about Paula and the secrets from her past in this town, where she is surrounded by people and events she has tried to forget.

Described by Lee Child as a 'knockout new talent' Claire McGowan has created a story which is both compelling and thrilling, and her clever ease of storytelling draws you in and leaves you wanting more. If you enjoy crime novels and like to listen to audiobooks, borrow this book from Libraries NI online audiobook collection, and start your journey with the exceedingly likable, impulsive character, that is Doctor Paula Maguire forensic psychologist.
