Dad Reading With Child At Bedtime

It is a well-recognised fact that Mums read more to their children than Dads. However the importance and impact of fathers and male carers reading to children should never be underestimated.

Harry Kane, Ariana Grande or your child’s teacher can all be role-models but the greatest role-models for children are their parents/carers.

Some of the benefits of Dads reading with their children are:

  • It has a significant Impact on a child’s language development
  • It helps a child’s mental health and physical development
  • Sharing stories is a perfect way for dads to bond with their children and it strengthens relationships
  • It is a pleasurable activity and as well as being good for children is good for Dad’s health too

What should Dads read with their children? There are no rules here, except that it should be something Dad enjoys so that his enthusiasm will be passed on.  If Dad is not enjoying a story neither will his child.

The Wild World Heroes, Summer Reading Challenge 2021 has a theme of the environment, nature and protecting our planet.  There are many story books and fact books published on this topic which are perfect for Dads to share with their children. Why not go along to your local library to borrow some of these lovely books and remember it’s free to do so!
