Samuel Freeland was born on 3 October 1895 in Belfast to parents Margery Brown and David Freeland, a store-keeper, of Lavinia Street. By 1911 the family had moved to Meadowbank Street, off the Lisburn Road. Freeland joined the staff of the Museum and Art Gallery (which was then housed on the second floor of Belfast Central Library) on 24 June 1910 as an assistant to the curator, Arthur Deane. It is possible that Freeland corresponded more frequently than the one letter in his collection but it is likely that this correspondence would have been between him and Arthur Deane of the museum.
He joined the R.A.M.C. in early November 1915 and served “overseas”.
Freeland died on 17 April 1930.
