13th August. (1918).

Dear Mr Brown,

It is with great regret that I write to you the sad news that your son Pte. Brown (41451) has been killed in action. We buried him last night in a cemetery near here, and a cross with inscription will be erected in a day or two.

I am glad that he did not suffer any pain. His comrades feel his loss very much as he was a very gallant soldier.

Yours sincerely,

W.B. Allman. C.F. William Brown joined Library staff as a boy in October 1910.

Enlisted in the N.I.H. 15th November 1915.
Transferred to Irish Fus. during 1917 and was killed in action in France about 12th August 1918
