Letter
22nd September, 1917
Sir,
I am directed by the Library and Technical Committee of the Belfast Corporation to inform you that it has been reported to them that you have been in the employment of the Leeds Corporation Tramway Department since 22nd May last, and that, concealing this fact, your wife, acting as your agent, continued to draw your wages from the Belfast Corporation until the end of August, although such wages were only payable on the condition that you were serving in this Army and had given up civil employment.
The sum paid to you by the Belfast Corporation during the period referred to was £17:16:6, and you are hereby required to re-fund same within one week from date hereof, otherwise such proceedings will be instituted against you as may be advised.
I am further directed to inquire what explanation or justification you have to offer for drawing the wages referred to in the circumstances mentioned.
Yours faithfully,
Town Solicitor
Mr Matthew Butler
