Dear Private Eagleson,

I received your letter of the 31st ult., 54 and your apology for neither writing nor calling upon me since you joined the Colours a year ago. I cannot forebear telling you that you are the only one out of seven of the library staff who have joined the Colours that has shown such indifference to me. As to your weekend visits when stationed in Newry, you are quite wrong in assuming that I would not be at the Central Library at half past three on Saturday afternoon. All the staff know quite well that the Chief Librarian is here until 5 o'clock on Saturday same as any other day, Tuesdays excepted. When you called at the Library one day in August last, while I was away on holidays, you should not have inquired for me from an attendant, but have gone direct to the Chief Assistant, Mr Goldsbrough. All these weeks and months past, while waiting to see or hear from you, I have nevertheless certified payment of your wages which have been regularly paid to a member of your family.

I presume that I will not again have to call you to halt in this matter, as I believe you have made these omissions in ignorance.
I shall always be glad either to see or hear from you, and wish you every success in your work and that your life may be long spared for the good of those belonging to you as well as to the country you are now so honourably serving.

I am,
Yours truly,

Chief Librarian

Private J.F. Eagleson
