Glengormley Library Celebrates 60 Years of Stories, Memories and Community
Published 05 Jun 2026
Glengormley Library is inviting local people to join in a special day of celebrations as it marks its 60th birthday on Thursday 11 June.
For six decades, the library has been a familiar part of community life, welcoming generations of readers, learners and families through its doors. Now local residents are being encouraged to come along and help celebrate its rich history, share their memories and look ahead to the future.
The morning celebration, taking place from 10:00am to 12 noon, will feature guest speakers, community stories, refreshments, live music from local choir Una Voce and a look back at the library's history through photographs and memorabilia.
Among the special guests will be local historian Michael McKernan, who will share insights into the history of the Glengormley and Carnmoney area, and Kathy Wolff from the Community Relations Forum, who will reflect on the important role community organisations continue to play in bringing people together.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to record and share their favourite library memories, helping to create a lasting record of the stories, people and experiences that have shaped the library over the past 60 years.
The celebrations will continue into the afternoon with a family-friendly event from 2:00pm to 4:00pm in the children's library. Young visitors can enjoy crafts, games and activities while learning more about the library's history in a fun and engaging way.
Kim Keys, Libraries NI Deputy Head of Service, said:
"Glengormley Library has been at the heart of the community for 60 years. During that time, it has supported generations of local people through reading, learning, creativity and community life.
This celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the library's history, celebrate the people who have helped shape it and thank the community for its continued support. Guests are encouraged to share their own memories and help capture the stories that have made Glengormley Library an important part of local life for six decades."
Everyone is welcome to attend and join the celebrations.
The morning event takes place from 10:00am to 12 noon and booking is essential. The family event runs from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
