Libraries in Derry and Strabane Set to Host a Packed Programme of Events This March

Programme of free events in Derry and Strabane libraries this MarchLibraries in the Derry and Strabane area are preparing for a busy March with an exciting line-up of events for all ages. From robotics and astronomy to storytelling and music, these events offer something for everyone, reinforcing libraries as vibrant community spaces for learning and creativity.

Kicking off the month, Waterside Library will host a Free Family Fun Day on Saturday 1 March from 10:00am to 5:00pm, offering a fantastic day of entertainment for all the family. Highlights include performances by Parky the Magician (booking essential), facepainting and balloon modelling by Annettie-Spaghetti, arts and crafts, LEGO, board games, and storytelling sessions. Light refreshments will be provided, and everyone is welcome to attend.

Young minds will have the chance to explore robotics with a special Robotic Session on Tuesday 4 March from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in Derry Central Library. Aimed at young people aged 10-15, this hands-on session will introduce participants to the fascinating world of robotic technology.

To mark World Book Day, Derry Central Library will welcome renowned author Jane Buckley for a special reading from her Stones Corner series on Thursday 6 March at 11:00am. Jane will also share insights into self-publishing, offering valuable advice for aspiring writers. Later that afternoon at 2:00pm, Patryk Sadowski will deliver an engaging talk on astronomy, showcasing stunning space photography and discussing fascinating books on the subject.

On Tuesday 18 March from 2:00pm to 3:00pm, Shantallow Library will come alive with the sounds of Irish music as Pat McCafferty and The Villagers perform a selection of classic Irish songs to mark St. Patrick’s Day. A perfect opportunity for families to come together and enjoy a lively afternoon of music and culture.

For younger children, Makaton Tutor Ana María Valadez Peña will lead a fun and interactive Makaton session on Saturday 29 March from 11:00am to 12 noon in Derry Central Library, inspiring the use of this communication system in a welcoming environment.
