Libraries NI to Host Events for Alzheimer’s Awareness Day
Published 05 Sept 2025
Libraries NI will join organisations worldwide in marking Alzheimer’s Awareness Day which takes place on Sunday 21 September, with a wide range of events and activities taking place in libraries across Northern Ireland.
From memory cafés and musical reminiscence sessions to poetry mornings, art displays and storytelling, libraries will provide welcoming spaces where people living with dementia, their families and carers can connect, share memories and enjoy meaningful activities together.
Libraries are recognised as welcoming and trusted places at the heart of communities and play a valuable role in supporting people affected by dementia. Regular programmes such as reminiscence sessions, Memory Lane Cafes, Tea and Newspapers, and community drop-ins all help to spark memories, combat loneliness and create opportunities for social connection.
Dr Jim O’Hagan, Chief Executive of Libraries NI, said:
“Alzheimer’s Awareness Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness and show support for those living with dementia and their loved ones. Libraries are inclusive, welcoming spaces where people can find companionship, enjoy activities designed to encourage conversation and reminiscence, and feel part of their community. We are pleased to offer this programme of events to mark the day and to continue providing ongoing support throughout the year.”
Events will take place in libraries across Northern Ireland with activities ranging from musical mindful colouring sessions, dementia-friendly film screenings and memory cafés, to talks, art workshops and coffee mornings.
