Running throughout May, the festival offers a varied and welcoming programme of events for all ages, designed to encourage people to call in, explore the refreshed surroundings and enjoy everything their local library has to offer.

The programme begins on Saturday 2 May with a lively animal encounter session, giving families the chance to meet a range of fascinating creatures up close. Creative opportunities follow, including a jewellery-making workshop on Saturday 9 May, offering something a little different for those looking to try a new skill.

There are also opportunities to pause and connect with others, including a ‘Time for Tea’ session on Tuesday 12 May, marking Mental Health Awareness Week and offering a simple chance to enjoy a cuppa and conversation in a relaxed setting.

Family-focused events continue throughout the month, with ‘Bug-tastic Time’ on Saturday 16 May inviting children to get hands-on with nature through crafts and storytelling. Later in the programme, a special local history book launch on Thursday 21 May will celebrate the stories and communities that have shaped Newtownabbey, bringing people together through shared heritage.

The festival also includes opportunities to learn more about supporting others, with a Dementia Friends Talk delivered by the Alzheimer’s Society taking place on Tuesday 19 May.

The MayFest programme has been designed to reflect the role of the library as a shared space for the whole community – somewhere people can come together, try something new or simply spend time in a familiar and supportive place.

The refurbishment of Rathcoole Library has created a bright, modern and flexible space, and MayFest offers the perfect opportunity for both new and existing customers to see what’s available and get involved.

These events sit alongside the library’s regular programme of weekly activities, ensuring there is always something happening for visitors of all ages.

All events are free, with booking required for some sessions.
