Sometimes, making a difference doesn't begin with a big gesture. It starts with somewhere to sit, a friendly smile or simply being around other people.

For Noreen McClelland, Chair of the Antrim and Newtownabbey Loneliness Network, libraries are one of the most important community spaces in helping people feel less alone.

People think loneliness only affects older people, but it can affect anyone, she explains. Children, young people, students moving away from home, parents, people working remotely - there are so many reasons someone can feel isolated

That belief is at the heart of Libraries NI's work to create welcoming, inclusive spaces where everyone feels comfortable spending time, whether they're borrowing books, studying, attending an event or simply enjoying the company of others.

It is an approach reflected in Libraries NI's Loneliness Awareness Week campaign message:

A Place to Sit. A Place to Speak. A Place to Belong.

Across Northern Ireland, libraries provide much more than access to books. They offer free, safe and welcoming spaces where there is no expectation to spend money or take part in an activity. People can read the newspaper, enjoy a cup of tea at a community event, study, work, ask for advice or simply spend time in the company of others.

The library is one of those places where you can just come and sit

"The staff are excellent. They encourage people, they help them and they point them in the right direction if they need support. There's no pressure. You can simply be there."

Through initiatives such as New Chapter Cafés, health and wellbeing events, reading groups, digital support sessions and hundreds of everyday conversations, Libraries NI creates opportunities for people to meet others, build confidence and discover support within their own community.

For Noreen, it is often the smallest moments that make the biggest difference.

Quote: If someone smiles at you or says hello, it means quite a lot

"Sometimes people are nervous about joining something new, but libraries are welcoming places. You can come in, have a look around, sit down with a cup of tea and realise there are other people who feel exactly the same as you."

Libraries are places where people can learn, read, work, volunteer or take part in activities, but they are also places where friendships begin, conversations happen naturally and people feel part of their community.

Every day, in libraries across Northern Ireland, those small moments of welcome help people feel seen, supported and less alone.

Sometimes that's all it takes to make a difference.
