All public libraries in Northern Ireland will be closed on Monday 31 August and Mobile Libraries will not be on the road. The Out of Hours Service will be available in applicable libraries. You can check out our eResources via our website or app.

| Quiet Time |
Quiet Time every Tuesday from 5:00pm until 6:00pm. Lights will be dimmed and we will do our best to keep noise to a minimum to provide a peaceful atmosphere. Materials such as mindful colouring will be available on demand from staff. Suitable for all. |

| Tea and Newspapers |
Every Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am to 12 noon. Numbers are limited, please contact branch for more details. Tea and Newspapers groups give adults the opportunity to meet new people, socialise and discuss local and national affairs in the newspapers while enjoying complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits. |

| Knit and Natter |
Every Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am to 12 noon. Booking is essential as numbers are limited. Please contact staff for more details. Knit and Natter groups are for adults who enjoy knitting, crochet, cross stitch and other crafts. They are free of charge to attend and participants have the opportunity to share hints and tips, swap patterns, meet new people and learn new skills. Members can bring along a project they are already working on or can start something new. |

| 'Guardians of the Lough' by Joanne Campbell |
Throughout the month of August, Whitehead library is delighted to host an exhibition by local artist Joanne Campbell. ‘Guardians of the Lough’ showcases a collection of paintings inspired by the iconic landmarks and familiar scenes that line Belfast Lough. Through her distinctive artistic style, Joanne celebrates the beauty, heritage, and character of these treasured local places.

| Rhythm and Rhyme |
Please note this event will resume in September 2026 after the summer break. Every Wednesday. Children attending this event must be accompanied by an adult. Booking essential. Rhythm and Rhyme sessions introduce parents and children aged 0 - 4 years to the wonder of rhymes, songs and stories. Become a wildlife architect and build a cosy bug hotel using recycled materials! Children aged 6-10 will enjoy this creative workshop while learning how insects help our gardens and why they need safe places to shelter. | Bee Creative! Decorate a Plant Pot |
Buzz into the library this September and help us celebrate Go Green with Libraries NI. We will be having a fun craft session where children can decorate their own plant pot, take it home, plant some pollinator-friendly flowers, and help create a colourful haven for bees and butterflies.

| Good Relations Week 2026 - Our Community, Our Story. |
Celebrate Good Relations Week by helping to create a community mural that reflects what makes Whitehead such a special place to live, work and visit. Open to all ages, this collaborative artwork invites everyone to add their own drawing, message or creative contribution, celebrating the people, places and values that make Whitehead a great community. Together, we'll create a display that showcases kindness, belonging, respect and everything that helps communities thrive. | Weaving Friendships - Good Relations Week |
Celebrate Good Relations Week with a colourful friendship bracelet-making workshop for children aged 6+. Using a variety of colourful threads and beads, children will create their own unique friendship bracelets while exploring the values of kindness, respect and inclusion. It's a fun, creative way to celebrate friendship, make new connections, and learn how small acts of kindness can help bring people together. All materials are provided, and everyone is welcome.

| Become a Librarian for an Hour - Love Your Library Day |
Ever wondered what it would be like to run the library? Children will get the chance to become Junior Librarians and take on six fun missions, from sorting real books and helping some very unusual customers to hunting for great covers, designing a bookmark and recommending their own brilliant read. | Book Week NI 2026 - An Afternoon with Hilary McCollum |
Join us for a special Book Week NI event with acclaimed Northern Ireland author Hilary McCollum as she discusses her latest novel, As a Lover. You may already know Hilary from her debut novel, Gold Digger, or her memoir, Funny Peculiar, published under the pseudonym Constance McCullagh. Whether you're already a fan of her writing or discovering her work for the first time, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear from one of Northern Ireland's most compelling contemporary voices. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions during the audience Q&A.

Out of Hours Service
The Out of Hours Service allows adults (aged 18 years and over) controlled access to Whitehead Library for an additional 34 hours per week outside of normal opening hours.
Registered members can access a limited but important range of services on a self-service basis, including broadband/Wi-Fi access, printing facilities, study space and book borrowing. To register, just call in or contact the library during normal opening hours and ask staff for details.
